Troubleshooting Tips
Dish Network receivers operate very similar to
a computer and occasionally may lock up or freeze. This is most
common during electrical storms or black outs/brown outs from the
power company. In most cases resetting the receiver will fix the
problem and restore your services.
Front Panel Reset (Warm Boot) -
Very similar to pressing the "Reset" button on a computer. To
perform a FPR simply go to the front of the receiver and press and
hold the "Power" button for about 10 seconds. On some receiver
models the power button is located behind a push to open door panel
on the front right side of the receiver. Once the receiver has
rebooted you can release the button and the receiver will take about
1-5 minutes to reboot, re-acquire the satellite signal and download
the program guide information. If this doesn't fix the problem go on
to the next step. Power Cycle the
Receiver (Cold Boot) -
In cases where the user is not comfortable
with performing a Front Panel Reset, a FPR does not work or rare
cases where the power button is missing or damaged, users can
power cycle the receiver by simply unplugging the receiver from the
electrical outlet for at least 30 seconds and then re-plugging it to
the outlet. This option allows the receiver to completely restart
and can take 2-6 minutes to complete. If this doesn't fix the
problem go on to the next step.
Check Switch- Check switch is used by your receiver to make
sure it is receiving signal from all the satellite locations that it
is supposed to be receiving. If you have Standard Definition service
you should be receiving signal from (2) satellite locations. If you
have High Definition service you should be receiving signal from (3)
satellite locations. To run a "Check Switch" Press the small
Menu button on your remote control then press 6 - 1 - 1
This will put you at the Point Dish screen. From there use the Up
arrow and the Select button to choose Check Switch
then choose Test. The test should come up as testing 1 of 2,
1 of 3 or 1 of 4. If you see 1 of 38 come up you should check to
make sure the cable line is connected securely to your receiver and
that it is not damaged, cut or chewed up. If the test completes
properly you should see the following screen

The Green boxes with OK indicate that the
receiver is receiving signal from all (3) satellites in this
instance. Had there been a reception problem you would see Red boxes
or X in the boxes and the status would say Reception Error.
The most common reason for a reception error is
from bushes or trees growing in front of your dish. You should check
to make sure nothing is growing in front of the dish and consider
trimming bushes or limbs when safely possible. Other common issues
include damage to the dish itself, the dish moving from impacts or
storms and water damage to the dish, cable or connectors. Lightning
damage is also a common problem and all of these issues need to be
checked by a Dish Network Technician.
